Another reason to keep your domain updated
The thought of loosing a domain name is scary – really scary. PCName’s is apparently making it a heck of a lot easier to snap up domain names if the owner forgets to renew them, before they actually expire. Link to more info.
This appears to affect customers who opt for an auto-renewal option with their registrar. If their credit card doesn’t go through on the auto-renew, the registrar can then auction off the domain before it actually expires.
PCNames collects data from four registrars: SnapNames, NameWinner, TDNAM (Godaddy) and Enom and evaluates them using an 20 point system. Opening bids range from $30 to $60, a lot lower than what people are paying for expired domains.
So, what does this mean for the average guy? Keep your domain up to date and if you’re worried about it, don’t select an autorenew option. It may not even be a bad idea to purchase a few years in advance on your more important domains just in case. Accidents and mistakes happen, as per our report on the multi-million dollar lawsuit against TuCows.

Good article. I lost 2 domains in my beginning years of a webmaster and now they are taken and are semi-big sites (lost them around 1999). Very saddening.
My main registrar now is IPower.com, they give me renewal notices, and I bought domains from them for only $2.95 so I’m pretty happy with the service.
Click here if your interested in that.
I did have to use SnapNames.com once,but I didn’t get the name.
